SOLARIS X86 SOLUTIONS
NetCon Software for Solaris x86
NetCon offers convenient and versatile DOS and Windows-to-UNIX(R)
and UNIX-to-UNIX connectivity for SunSoft's Solaris(TM) x86
operating environment, without need for additional servers or
software. In addition, for any LAN that includes a Novell(R)
NetWare(R) server, NetCon software allows a UNIX-based computer to
be configured as either a client or server under NetWare. For
UNIX-to-UNIX communication, NetCon supplies multithreaded IPX(TM)
and SPX protocols that support both Ethernet and Token Ring
without need for TCP/IP or NFS(R).
NetCon's terminal emulation and printer sharing features simplify
work group communications in heterogeneous computing environments.
The software supports transparent DOS/UNIX file exchange and bi-
directional printing between UNIX and NetWare environments. DOS
and Windows users can login to a UNIX system on the network and
access all UNIX services and applications. Users can also easily
"HOT KEY" between UNIX screens.
A Stable, Open Platform
Solaris x86 is a powerful and versatile UNIX operating environment
for the Intel(R) x86 platform. Designed as a foundation for
enterprise computing, it supports major industry standards and
provides high-performance 32-bit UNIX multitasking, multithreading
and multiuser capabilities. Solaris x86 is compatible with Solaris
SPARC(R), ensuring full interoperability between the leading CISC
(x86) and RISC (SPARC) platforms. And Solaris x86 is scalable from
desktops to supercomputers, so that customers can configure
heterogeneous enterprise networks and expand them easily as their
computing needs evolve.
Solaris x86 provides native ONC+(TM) technology-based LAN and WAN
networking to support broadly distributed computing and system
management. Solaris also includes powerful application and
Graphical User Interface (GUI) development tools through the
OpenWindows(TM) facility, and a rich suite of user productivity
applications under DeskSet(TM). Numerous commercial third-party
applications, including many Microsoft(R) Windows and DOS
applications, run in the Solaris x86 environment.
NetCon Features and Benefits
* DOS and Windows-to-UNIX multiscreen
terminal emulation: DOS login to UNIX systems on the network
provides access to all UNIX services and applications. User "HOT
KEY" switching between UNIX screens. Full-featured ANSI SPX
terminal emulator and server included.
* Standalone IPX and SPX server option:
provides complete networking with high-performance DOS-to-UNIX
file and print services without additional servers or software.
Multithreading is in compliance with Solaris 2 and System V
Release 4 symmetrical multiprocessing operating system
specifications.
* DOS and Windows-to-UNIX file access: DOS
NetWare clients can access the UNIX file system as if it were a
NetWare server, map up to 26 drives directly onto UNIX
directories
* DOS and Windows-to-UNIX printing:
DOS/Windows users can redirect LPT1, LPT2 or LPT3 to any UNIX
printer
* IPX and SPX protocols: support Ethernet
and Token Ring without need for TCP/IP or NFS; support source
routing for Token Ring
* Novell Standard 802.3 or Type II
Ethernet protocols: eliminate the need to change workstation or
server configuration
* UNIX and network security features: UNIX
login support maintains network security
* Auto-printer configuration: makes UNIX
print spoolers available to the network as NetWare print queues
* Bi-directional printing: UNIX clients
can print on NetWare printers, DOS clients can print on UNIX
printers
* No need for UNIX disk partitioning:
NetWare clients can map UNIX directories from the NetWare server
* Transparent file exchange: allows saving
UNIX files directly to the Novell hard disk, and DOS files to the
UNIX hard disk
* Mount flexibility: UNIX servers can
mount NetWare servers as clients, or other UNIX servers as
clients or servers
* Easy login: No TCP/IP required for login
or use of hard drive as DOS server
* Dynamic virtual memory bindery: provides
instant security and access to any network resource through
locking and disk write-through. Auto-updating keeps bindery
current as system configurations change
* High-speed UNIX-to-UNIX networking:
provides IPX/SPX network environment between UNIX and NetCon
servers; many times faster than TCP/IP
